I dislike the R34, mostly because it’s too overplayed.
The R32 is the true driver’s car. It’s the very car the R34 tried to get back to.
I’ve seen a few R33s here in WI, so it’s not super surprising to me. Sorry to rain on your parade, carry on!

So, I was born in the early 80s and I never heard about the R33 or R34 or Skyline anything until the Fast and Furious movies came out, which I didn’t watch.
Putting my own ignorance aside, what makes these cars so great?

The R32 dominated early ‘90s touring car championships in Australia and Japan and earned it’s nickname of Godzilla there. It was easily one, if not the, best performance car from Japan at the time (Supra and NSX fans will argue this point though). The R33 and R34 generations carried on this winning tradition and further established the legend of the GTR. Combine that with the aftermarket tuned beasts built by the powerhouse Japanese tuning shops like Top Secret, Jun, and Blitz, plus the fact that it was “forbidden fruit” in the US, and you have the perfect recipe for the obsession for this car.

R33s are out there by now , but true R33 GT-Rs are still forbidden fruit ‘til January, so assuming this is a real GT-R & not a modified GTS-T or something, that’s where the excitement comes from. And I’m with you Blue Mazda2, a day seeing ANY Skyline is a good day!

In Florida, R34 GT-Rs have been spotted from time to time. Yes, they are not technically legal. But that has never stopped the state DMV from registering them anyway. You can literally swap a VIN plate off a wrecked 240SX and no one in the state office will care one iota.

Ah, gotcha. I was just curious because my dad had basically the same reaction (or lackthereof really) when I freaked out the first time I saw one at a car show we went to. He was completely unfazed . But he’s an pro-touring muscle car guy, so it makes sense, lol.

There are actually a handful of legal R 33s and R 34s (and R32s before the 25 year law caught up to them) floating around - Motorex actually did their job on the R33s there for a while before they started brining in 32s and 34s illegally and saying they were 33s.. in a rare moment of using common sense, the gub’munt decided it wasn’t the custo mers’ fault & wrote them all exemption letters. But other than those & a few that were brought in under “show & display” exemption (that aren’t SUPPOSED to be driven * wink wink*), those are the only legal ones.
But yeah, I’m sure there’s plenty of “240SXs” that look suspiciously just like R33s and R34s that are titled & registered primarily in Florida. I’m fairly sure you can register a chainsaw engine-powered shopping cart for road use in Florida by going to Bob’s Vehicle Registration, Liquor Store, and Bait Shop on the right day
